Under article 23 of Law 5275/2026 (which added article 79B to the Migration Code), a new category of entry visa was established for third-country nationals who have been admitted to Higher Education Institutions, University Legal Entities and Colleges in Greece, as visiting professors.
This regulation aims to attract highly qualified third-country nationals who will have the opportunity to contribute to the educational process in the country and fills a long-standing gap, as until now, the admission of visiting professors was only possible either under a uniform visa or under a visa exemption regime, with the possibility of extending their stay in both cases in accordance with the Schengen acquis, so that the academic semester could be completed without interruption.
The new national entry visa is valid for up to twelve (12) months and grants the third-country national the right to enter and reside in the country, without the need to obtain a residence permit, for the period during which they will serve as a visiting professor at an educational institution in Greece.
