GREEK DIGITAL NOMAD RESIDENCE PERMIT

Providing work remotely, using information technologies, gave people the possibility to choose a place of residence other than the place of work. This new reality has led the greek legislator to introduce a residence permit for so-called digital nomads, who choose Greece as their place of residence.

Digital nomads are third-country nationals who are self-employed, freelancers or employees and work remotely using Information and Communication Technologies for employers or clients established outside Greece and wish to establish their residence in Greece.

In order to obtain a Digital Nomad Residence Permit, the applicant must hold either a national entry visa issued by the competent Greek consular authority (Visa D), a uniform entry visa (tourist visa) or a visa exemption. In the latter two cases, a residential lease agreement or a property purchase contract in Greece is required.
Prior to the expiry of the relevant visa, an application for the granting of residence permit must be submitted to the competent Directorate for Aliens and Migration of the place of residence.

Required Documents, inter alia, include:

  • In the case of an employee: an employment contract, services or works contract, or other proof of an employment relationship with an employer established outside the Greek territory.
  • In the case of a freelancer: more than one (1) services or works contract is required.
  • In the case of a self-employed person operating their own business: documentation evidencing the applicant’s status within the company, as well as information relating to the business, which must be established outside Greece.
  • Sufficient financial resources, amounting to at least three thousand five hundred (3,500) euros per month, evidenced either by the employment or services contract or proof of the employment relationship in cases of dependent employment or provision of services, or alternatively by bank statements.

The residence permit is issued for a period of three (3) years and may be renewed for an equal time period.

Third-country nationals falling under the above categories may be accompanied by their family members, namely their spouse or partner, their unmarried common children under the age of eighteen (18), including adopted children, as well as the unmarried children under the age of eighteen (18) of either the applicant or the spouse/partner, provided that either of them has parental custody. Each family member must submit an individual application for granting residence permit, which shall expire simultaneously with that of the main applicant.

The digital nomad residence permit does not grant the right of access to dependent employment or independent economic activity in Greece, either to the main applicant or to his family members.
