The second-generation residence permit was established pursuant to Article 108 of Law 4251/2014 and granted the right of lawful residence for a period of five (5) years to third-country nationals who were either born in Greece or had successfully completed six (6) grades of a greek school in Greece, before reaching the age of twenty-three (23).
Pursuant to Article 161 of Law 5038/2023, the second-generation residence permit was reclassified as a residence permit of ten (10) years’ duration, subject to the same eligibility requirements.
Key Requirements for granting the residence permit:
The applicant must have been born in Greece or
The applicant must have successfully completed six (6) grades of a greek school in Greece before reaching the age of twenty-three (23).
Duration and Renewal of the residence permit – Rights and Obligations:
The residence permit is granted for a period of ten (10) years and, upon its expiry, is automatically converted into a long-term resident permit, provided that the third-country national has not been absent from Greece for the periods specified by law.
The permit grants full access to the labour market, both in employed and self-employed activities.
For the granting of the permit, the applicant must not have been absent from Greece for a continuous period of two (2) years.
