GREEK CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH AND EDUCATION IN GREECE

The Greek Citizenship Code (Law 3838/2010), as amended by Law 4332/2015, grants the right to a child of foreign nationals who was born in Greece, has been enrolled in the first grade of primary school, and continues to attend a Greek school, to acquire Greek citizenship upon submission of a relevant declaration–application by both parents.

 

I. Conditions to be fulfilled

  • The child must be a minor at the time of application
  • The child must be enrolled in the first grade of a Greek primary school and must continue to attend, without interruption, a Greek school at the time the parents submit their joint declaration–application
  • Both parents must hold a valid residence permit
  • One of the parents must prove five (5) years of continuous legal residence in Greece prior to the birth of the child. If this condition is not met, it suffices that one of the parents was lawfully residing in Greece for at least one (1) day prior to the child’s birth and has completed ten (10) years of continuous legal residence in the country at the time of submission of the declaration–application.

 

II. Residence permits required to be held by the parents

Both parents must hold a valid residence permit. In addition, one of the must hold one of the following residence permits:

  1. Long-term resident permit or
  2. Second-generation residence permit or
  3. Indefinite-duration or ten-year residence permit or
  4. Permanent residence card of a family member of a Greek or an EU citizen or
  5. Certificate of permanent residence of an EU citizen or
  6. Residence permit as a recognized refugee, beneficiary of subsidiary protection, or stateless person or
  7. Special Identity Card for Ethnic Greeks (EDTO), accompanied by a valid uniform-type residence permit or another lawful residence title for ethnic Greeks.

For submitting an application for the acquisition of Greek citizenship, a public fee in the amount of €100 is payable.
