Under the recently enacted Law 5275/2026, a significant change has been introduced regarding the procedure for obtaining a residence permit for digital nomads.
Specifically, until now, interested third-country nationals had the possibility to enter the country and apply for the granting of a residence permit as digital nomads either after obtaining a national entry visa from the competent consular authority (Visa D) or with a uniform entry visa (tourist visa) or under a visa exemption regime.
Following the amendments introduced by Law 5275/2026, this option has been abolished, and third-country nationals may now qualify for a digital nomad residence permit only after obtaining the corresponding national entry visa (Visa D).
This regulation was implemented in order to ensure, at the initial level of the Greek consular authority, the verification of the digital nomad’s documents, both with regard to their authenticity and to the accuracy of their content, in cooperation with the respective employers in the country of origin or habitual residence of the third-country national digital nomad. However, it is evident that this change makes the submission of applications for this specific residence permit more difficult compared to the regime previously in force.
